Paris, octobre 2025.

A programme supporting the digital and energy transition

The project is structured around four complementary components:

  • Grid Digitalization: A feasibility study on the digitalization of a 110 kV substation in accordance with the international IEC 61850 standard. This approach aims to replace copper wiring with fiber optic connections, leading to cost reductions, easier remote operations, enhanced cybersecurity, and improved equipment monitoring.
  • Supply Security: Development of an Antares model, an energy simulation tool, enabling MEPSO to conduct national supply security studies in compliance with European regulations (NRAA – National Resource Adequacy Assessment).
  • Reserve Calculation: Development of a novel model based on machine learning techniques to anticipate electricity reserve requirements over a 3-to-5-year horizon, in the context of increasing integration of renewable energy sources.
  • Knowledge Transfer on Electrical Losses: Training MEPSO teams in the measurement, reduction, and management of electrical losses, based on best practices developed in France

A partnership rooted in the Balkans region

Present in Serbia since 2021, RTE international has established a regional foothold at the heart of the Balkans. Its Serbian subsidiary, serving as a key operational hub for Southeast Europe, supports transmission system operators in addressing their energy challenges.

This project with MEPSO fully aligns with this regional approach, reflecting RTE international’s commitment to supporting the modernization of power systems in the Balkans and promoting the gradual integration of European energy markets.

Veronika Milewski, CEO of RTE international, emphasizes:
“This project demonstrates RTE international’s ability to leverage its technical expertise and in-depth knowledge of European power systems to support the energy transition in the Balkans. By assisting MEPSO in power system modelling, reserve calculation, and infrastructure digitalization, we help enhance the reliability, efficiency, and competitiveness of the Macedonian grid as it aligns with European standards.”
