Introducing the HVDC innovation laboratory

The HVDC Innovation Laboratory (HIL) is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to advancing the development and implementation of high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology and more generally of any power electronics-based equipment (such as FACTS, Wind & PV generation, Battery Energy Storage).

Located on the Campus Transfo of RTE international’s parent company, RTE France, the HIL plays a pivotal role in the context of innovative HVDC projects by providing a controlled environment for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and real-time simulations.

The role of the laboratory

This laboratory is essential for validating the performance and reliability of HVDC systems throughout their entire lifecycle. Initially, it serves to ensure that HVDC systems meet stringent design and performance requirements before their deployment in real-world settings.

However, its role extends beyond pre-deployment validation. The HIL is also crucial during the operational phase, providing continuous support and validation for HVDC systems as part of maintenance, updates, and enhancements.

Through regular training and services, the laboratory aids in diagnosing issues, testing software updates, and verifying system performance to maintain operational integrity over the years.

Guaranteeing interoperability and reliability

Moreover, the HVDC Innovation Laboratory addresses the critical need for interoperability testing. With the recent surge in the integration of power electronics into transmission systems, ensuring that different systems and components can work seamlessly together has become paramount.

Interoperability testing at HIL involves rigorous examination of how various systems from different vendors interact within a grid. This includes the validation of control systems, harmonics, and resonance interactions, ensuring that all components function cordially to support a stable and efficient power grid.

The HVDC Innovation Laboratory stands at the forefront of these efforts, leveraging its advanced simulation and testing capabilities to support the evolving landscape of HVDC technology and its integration into modern power systems.

Through these comprehensive services, the HIL ensures that HVDC systems are not only ready for initial deployment but also robust and adaptable to future challenges and technological advancements.
