Paris, 4 June 2025 – On the occasion of the State visit to Singapore by French President Emmanuel Macron, RTE international has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA), EDF Lab Asia Pacific and Think Smartgrids. This agreement lays the foundation for a Franco-Singaporean partnership between academic and industrial stakeholders, aimed at addressing the energy transition challenges in Southeast Asia.
An international alliance in service of the energy transition
Bringing together the scientific excellence of UGA and NTU, both global leaders in energy systems research, and the technical expertise of EDF, Think Smartgrids and RTE international, this initiative establishes a structured and enduring framework for collaboration focused on five key priorities:
- The development of intelligent, resilient and low-carbon electricity networks, integrating digitalisation, artificial intelligence and advanced flexibility technologies.
- The strengthening of regional interconnection, particularly through HVDC, HVAC and subsea cable infrastructure.
- Research and pilot projects centred on energy storage and flexibility solutions.
- The co-design of strategic roadmaps for smart grids, tailored to the energy landscape of Southeast Asia.
- Knowledge transfer, training and joint innovation, facilitated by researcher exchanges and the deployment of demonstrators.

RTE international brings technical expertise and regional acumen
For over a decade, RTE international has been involved in the modernisation of energy infrastructure and in supporting the energy transition across the region, including in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. This local experience significantly enhances its ability to contribute tangibly to the consortium’s objectives.
In this context, RTE international offers its expertise in several critical areas:
- The modelling and planning of interconnected electricity systems.
- Strategic advisory on system architecture for renewable energy integration and flexibility management.
- Support for the deployment of high-voltage electricity transmission technologies, particularly HVDC solutions and power electronics.
Veronika Milewski, Chief Executive Officer of RTE International, commented:
“We are proud to contribute our expertise in power systems engineering and planning to this Franco-Singaporean partnership. The RTE Group brings decades of expertise in system design, operation, interconnection strategy, and HVDC technology, key enablers of regional integration and decarbonization. These capabilities are directly aligned with Southeast Asia’s aspirations for safe, flexible and sustainable grids. Through this collaboration, we aim to share our operational know-how and help build the resilient power networks of tomorrow.”
