The increasing penetration of Power Electronic Devices (PED) within the AC network leads to higher risk of interaction of such systems between PED, network elements and/or conventional power plants. With their relatively fast controls, VSC converters can incite a series of expected or unexpected interactions on the grid.
These webinars will present theoretical background on interaction studies. We will also discuss the main technical challenges imposed by the analysis of interactions with VSC-HVDC links using EMT simulation tools (complexity of control and protection systems, confidentiality of the control and protection algorithms, simulation of large grids…)
The webinars will be illustrated by real test cases in which different HVDC manufacturers have been involved.

Trainer & HVDC Expert
Hani Saad received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Polytechnique of Montréal in 2007 and 2015, respectively. In 2015, he received the best Ph.D. thesis award from Polytechnic of Montreal. From 2008 to 2010 he worked at Techimp Spa. and in the Laboratory of Materials Engineering and High Voltages (LIMAT) of the University of Bologna on R&D activities. In 2013, he joined the French TSO RTE (Réseau de Transport d’Electricité), where he is currently involved in HVDC projects as a technical expert and in EMT studies. He is an active member in several Cigré B4 and C4 working groups.
Trainer & HVDC Expert
Pierre Rault obtained a Ph.D. degree at Ecole Centrale de Lille in 2014 in collaboration with RTE on the control of HVDC grids. He is currently working at RTE doing research on HVDC activities such as interoperability MMC and he also provides support for current RTE HVDC projects during tender and design stage. Currently, he is involved in Rte international activities to provide support on coordination and interoperability of parallel HVDC links. His field of expertise includes EMT offline and real-time simulations of HVDC systems.
Trainer & HVDC Expert
Graduated from École Supérieure d’Electricité (Supélec) France in 2002, he received his M.A.Sc. degree and phD degree from the École Polytechnique de Montréal in 2003 and 2017 respectively. From 2002 to 2004 he worked at IREQ (Hydro-Québec) on research and development activities related to the simulation and analysis of electromagnetic transients. From 2004 to 2009 he worked at the research center of EDF in the field of insulation coordination and power system simulations. In January 2010 he joined the French TSO RTE (Réseau de Transport d’Electricité) where he is currently involved in power system simulation and HVDC project as technical expert.
ABB HVDC R&D Project Manager
He received his MSc in power systems from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden 2011. He worked with power quality in Vattenfall between 2008-2010. In 2010 he joined ABB HVDC in Ludvika and have been working in LCC and VSC delivery projects. He has as well been involved in R&D activities such as: DC grid studies, Hybrid HVDC breaker, interoperability and converter typologies.
ABB PG Senior HVDC service engineer
He received his B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering at IUT, Iran and M.Sc in electric power Engineering at KTH, Sweden. In 2012 and 2017, he worked as R&D engineer in ABB CRC, and ABB HVDC respectively with DC breaker development project as well its C&P integration in a multiterminal configuration. From 2013-2016, he was involved with development, and commissioning of several VSC C&P systems before taking the technical lead role in commissioning of Johan Sverdrup Power From Shore project in 2018. Joining ABB Norway service team in 2019, he has been working as senior HVDC service engineer to support the local installed base.
SIEMENS Project manager for Control & Protection
He received his M.Sc. degree in Electrical Power Engineering from RWTH Aachen, Germany. He has been associated for HVDC VSC control system development project with Siemens PTI, Erlangen and J Power (Japan) during his studies. Since then he has been involved as R&D specialist for Switching frequency and loss optimization for MMC technology, network study specialist for VSC-HVDC dynamic performance/grid code compliance studies and responsible for offsite-onsite testing for CobraCable HVDC project. Since February 2019, he has been appointed as Project manager for Control & Protection for VikingLink. Currently he is also working for the Grid Forming working Group with National Grid in UK.
SIEMENS Energy Senior Key Expert HVDC VSC
He received his degree of Dipl. Ing. in Electrical Engineering in 2000 from the Lausitz University of Applied Science in Germany. Since then he works in different positions within Siemens HVDC engineering – first for line commutated converters and since 2013 as system design engineer for the voltage source converters. His last major work assignment has been the responsibility for the electrical system design for the NEMO Link 1000MW HVDC. End of 2019 he took over the same position for Johan Sverdrup Power from Shore Phase 2.
EQUINOR Chief Engineer
He received his M.Sc. degree in Electrical Power Engineering from NTH, Norway and Ph.D in Control Engineering from NTNU, Norway respectively in 1990 and 1993. Until 2001 he worked for ABB and Siemens. In 2001 he joined the Norwegian TSO, Statnett in network planning department with focus on HVDC projects. In 2011 he joined Equinor AS as expert in HVDC technologies and currently he keeps the position as Chief Engineer Electrical power systems in the company. He is an active member in several Cigré B4 working groups and convener of B4-81 Interaction between nearby VSC-HVDC converters, and senior member of IEEE.
